This procedure is often considered as an option for patients who may not choose the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band or the Laparoscopic Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass. This operation, like the others, also reduces the size of the stomach. It is performed laparoscopically with staples to create a small tube shaped stomach about the size of a banana. A portion of the stomach is removed, resulting in patients having less hunger and feeling the sensation of fullness after eating less food. This procedure allows for normal digestion and absorption. The food that is consumed passes through the digestive tract in the usual order, which allows the food to be fully absorbed in the body. The procedure utilizes your natural pylorus valve to regulate when food should empty into the rest of the body. The average person will lose 60% of their excess weight.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy was originally a two-step procedure where a small stomach sleeve is created as the first step. The second step is then completed after a period of time if the patient does not lose enough weight with the first step. A section of the small intestine is directly attached to the stomach pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine and enables the body to absorb fewer calories and consume less food. This two-step procedure is often done because patients may not be able to tolerate both procedures during a single operation. The second part is usually unnecessary.
Advantages:
Reduction of the ghrelin hunger-regulating hormone • The risk of overall complications is less • Less radical surgery than the gastric bypass • Follow up visits required for fills in gastric banding are not necessary • Unlike gastric banding, no foreign objects are left in the body that may slip, erode or become infected. • All nutrients are absorbed and very little chance exists of absorption issues.
Disadvantages:
The procedure is irreversible • Possibility of leakage creating fluids that could become infected • Does not always produce the expected weight loss. It is possible to regain lost weight with the intake of foods with a high calorie content • The gastric sleeve can stretch causing weight to be regained. • Blood clots • Wound infection • Heartburn and reflux
Complications:
Bleeding • Infection • Leakage of stomach • Reflux • Need for further surgery • Injury to surrounding organs • Minimal weight loss • Blood clots
