Netter's Gastroenterology - Surgeon, Painter, Author

Netter's GastroenterologyDr. Neil Floch not only studied biology and organic chemistry in college, he actually graduated as an art history major at Tufts University. It is a little known fact that he is an avid and talented oil painter. He had always admired the medical artwork of Dr. Frank Netter, who is considered the Leonardo DaVinci of medical artwork.

Five years ago, Dr. Floch was approached to write chapters for The Frank Netter book on Gastroenterology. The first edition was a worldwide bestseller and is now published in Spanish, Portugese, Italian, Polish, and Chinese, among other languages. Because of the recognition this publication has achieved internationally, Doctor Floch's name may be better recognized throughout the world than here in the United States.

The first edition included over 100 pages on chapters involving the anatomy and surgery of the esophagus and stomach, of which Dr. Floch is an expert surgeon.

The second edition, which was published in 2009, also includes two chapters on obesity surgery which Dr. Floch wrote with his friend and associate, Dr. Raul Rosenthal of the Cleveland Clinic, Weston Florida."The book is an excellent reference for medical students, primary care physicians, surgeons and gastroenterologists," explains Dr. Floch's father, Martin H. Floch, the editor of the publication. The book can be found on Amazon.com.

A Marathon of Changes

A Marathon of ChangesA Marathon of Changes, written by Jo Ann Miller, recalls her battle with obesity and her successful gastric bypass performed by Dr. Craig Floch. Ms. Miller is the daughter of Lt. General Thomas Miller (USMC), former head of Marine Aviation and the goddaughter of Senator John Glenn (Ret.) who wrote the foreword to the book.

in 2006, Jo Ann Miller had bariatric surgery. She eventually lost 150 lbs. and ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. With an irregular schedule, she wound up eating at all the wrong times and eventually weighed 300 lbs. She finally decided on a set of goals for her life that included becoming fit. The fitness goal came through bariatric surgery.

With the help of Dr. Craig Floch, she navigated through the difficult choices and lifestyle changes that helped shed half her weight and keep it off. She said,"I'd always lost pounds, but then I'd just put them back on." Now she was succeeding.

Read Jo An Miller's inspirational story on how she overcame obesity and other difficulties in her life. The profits from this book are being donated to the BP victims in the Gulf and a local Westport charity.

Drs Floch Win 2009 Best Physicians Award as Voted By Their Peers

DR. NEIL FLOCH AND DR. CRAIG FLOCH HAVE BEEN VOTED "TOP DOCTORS" IN THE 2009 CONSUMERS GUIDE TO TOP DOCTORS.

Best Physicians AwardThis guide provides the reader with the information they would need to help them choose the right doctors. It lists the Top-Rated Physicians in America's largest Metropolitan areas. These are doctors who are most highly recommended by other doctors. Details on each doctor's training, credentials and office locations are provided.

In explaining the purpose of producing this guide the publishers state,"Doctor-to doctor differences mean that choosing the wrong doctor might expose you to surgery, powerful drugs, or other treatments that will do you no good, might do you lasting harm, and will certainly contribute to discomfort and inconvenience. By choosing the wrong doctor, you might also miss out on therapy that could cure a disease or repair an injury, or you might get a treatment you need but have it performed so badly that it does you no good. In short, choice of the wrong doctor can result in needless suffering, or even death.

"Caring for the human organism is an exceedingly complex business, and not all doctors are equally prepared for the challenge. What's more, practicing medicine requires continual learning. ?Not all doctors have the same time, commitment or ability to grow in the profession."

This guide has collected recommendations from many thousands of doctors. It draws on what doctors learn about other doctors by reputation and by working with each other on individual cases, in carry out hospital staff responsibilities, and in other professional activities.

The guide is a special publication of Consumers' CHECHBOOK, a nonprofit research organization widely respected for over 30 years for producing consumer-oriented evaluations of physicians, hospitals, health plans, and other health care providers.
