Obesity is the health epidemic of our era. Our lifestyles, the foods we eat, our lack of exercise and daily pressures to work hard and provide for our families have led to unhealthy living. If you are seeking Connecticut obesity surgery please feel free to read more about obesity and how to calculate BMI.
The numbers are staggering as obesity now involves many of our loved ones. More than 65% of the population in the United States is overweight. 50 million are considered obese and 12 million morbidly obese. Many experience increased medical problems and a potentially increased risk of dying. There are over thirty obesity related medical conditions that include diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, cancer, cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, gallstones, heartburn, hypertension, infertility, arthritis, urinary incontinence, back and joint pain problems.
Bariatric surgery is recognized as a means to which the morbidly obese can regain their lives, resulting in the disappearance of their life threatening illnesses.
Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women is used to determine the eligibility of a patient desiring to have bariatric surgery. Obesity is most often measured by using this mathematical formula and the score is related to the risk of disease or dying. BMI can be determined by dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared and then multiplying by 705. For example, a woman who is 5'6" and weighs 190 would have a BMI of 31. (Please use our BMI calculator on this page to help you easily calculate your BMI).
The National Institute of Health has established guidelines that are followed to determine the patient’s candidacy for surgery. Any patient with a BMI of 35 to 39.5 who suffers with 1 or more major co-morbidities or a patient with a BMI of 40 or above, with or without any co-morbidities can be considered for bariatric surgery.
Studies have shown that 60 – 80% of excess weight that had been lost by a patient was kept off for a period of five years following the surgery. Our experience has enabled us to understand that each patient has his or her own individual needs. Our unique and comprehensive program is designed specifically for each patient, keeping that concept in mind.
