"Today I eat to live; not live to eat! Five years ago I had lap band surgery and lost 169 lbs. I had a laundry list of illnesses before my surgery and now they are all gone. Life is great now!"
When I turned fifty I went to my doctor for my annual physical, which I hated doing, and I had a laundry list of illnesses. I had a fatty liver. I was pre-diabetic. My knees were arthritic. My back hurt because I had a herniated disc years ago that was acting up terribly. I was in terrible condition for a 50-year-old, and my doctor told me that if I didn't do something fast and dramatic, that he would bet his entire net worth that I would have a major event by the time I was 60.
When I did the research for my surgery five years ago, Dr. Neil Floch was one of the few doctors in the area that had a lot of experience doing laparoscopic gastric surgery. I knew then, that I wanted it done laparoscopically, and I chose him because he had done a lot of bariatric surgery laparoscopically. By the time I saw him he had done about 200 lap bands, which was a lot at that time. Both he and his practice have been fabulous. I love them. They are extremely supportive. It's been a long, long process and they are always there for me.
Life is great now. I garden. I went back to school. I got a master's degree and my license in social work. I'm now a geriatric social worker. My daughter graduated from college and we now fight over my clothes. She now shops in my closet. So, every time I get something new I have to hide it so that she doesn't take it from me. It's kind of fun, and I got the belt that I am wearing today for the photo shoot out of her closet this morning.
Today it isn't about what I look like. It's about how I feel. I just have so much more energy; physically, psychologically, mentally, and spiritually. I can do so many things now that I always felt tired and exhausted doing before. The fatty liver has gone away. I had very bad sleep apnea. When I had the sleep apnea test, they made me stay overnight at the testing center and I was kept on a monitor the whole time. They were afraid I would have a heart attack after the surgery. Now I'm fine. I don't have sleep apnea. I don't snore anymore. My husband does. I sleep well and I wake refreshed. Now I eat to live, not live to eat. I go to the gym. I've traveled all over the world. I've gone to China for 8 weeks with this. I've gone to Italy for 3. I've gone to Prague. I traveled everywhere and I never had a problem finding something to eat. I always managed to be OK.
People do not get extra points for suffering. There are answers that are medically safe. You have to pick the right doctor and the right practice like I did. It's a long road and that's why you need the support. It isn't just about the day of surgery. It's about a lifetime. You need the support from an office like Dr. Floch's because it is a long road. It's not a get out of jail free card.
